Choosing a size is usually the first decision, and the easiest one to get wrong. This guide shows how many portions each cake size gives, how party and wedding slices differ, and which tier combinations suit different guest numbers.

Choosing With Confidence
Party portions
Generous dessert-sized slices, the way most people cut a birthday cake at home. Use these figures for birthdays, anniversaries and family celebrations.
Wedding portions
The traditional finger portion served at weddings — a slim slice around 1in x 1in x 4in, which is how caterers and venues cut a tiered cake.
Square gives you more
A square tier holds roughly a quarter more cake than a round tier of the same size, so squares are worth considering when guest numbers are tight.
Not everyone eats cake
As a rule of thumb, around three-quarters of your guests will take a slice. Many couples choose a cake that serves fewer than their full guest list, or add a hidden dummy tier for height.
Keepsake slices
